Marysville is a ghost town in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, United States. In 1870 the mining town of Marysville was established and named for for the first pioneer woman here Mary Ralston by Thomas Cruse owner of the famous Drum Lummon Mine. By the 1900 Marysville Mining District was reported to be the richest gold mining area in the world with a production of $60,000,000 one half of which was taken from the Drum Lummon Mine.
During the 1880’s and 1890’s Marysville was the leading gold producer in Montana. Other local rich gold mines also producing at that time were the Bald Mountain, Bald Butte, Empire Belmont, Penobscot, Gloster and Shannon. The towns population at its peak was estimated 4,000 residents. They had the service of 2 railroads and 60 business establishments, including 2 newspapers.
The town had something very unique for a mining camp-a baseball field with bleachers that still stands albeit its age and weathered appearance. The Methodist church was built in 1886. It was last used for services in 1939. It was bought and restored in 1967 and now church on the National Register of Historic Places.
World War II brought a ban on gold mining, damaging Marysville beyond repair. Its residents abandoned it. Today there are a few residents in Marysville Ghost Town and several abandoned buildings from the glory days. We prepared stunning pictures of Marysville Ghost Town in Montana.
