Abandoned Onsen Sokai Hotel located in Gunma Prefecture, Minakami. Minakami is a small town in Gunma Prefecture of Japan. The economy of Minakami is heavily dependent on seasonal tourism to onsen hot springs. Whilst traveling there recently, I was drawn to the Abandoned Onsen Sokai Hotel in the town. There’s little information on this old hotel, but it sits proudly facing on to opposite banks of the Tone River.
The rapid run-up in asset prices in the late 1980s, followed by their collapse in the early 1990s, left a debt
overhang that paralyzed the Japanese economy. Even from the outside, you can see the decay. Cracked windows, rusty stairwells give all the hotels an eery sense of abandonment.
