The area belonged to a former airbase of the DOSAAF pilot training school (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy, was a paramilitary sports organization in the Soviet Union, concerned mainly with weapons, automobiles, and aviation). The training school was named in memory of Alexander Pokryshkin, who was one of the highest-scoring Soviet aces. Since 2002 the Pokryshkin Flight Training Center has ceased to exist as an airfield due to a lack of funding. L-29, An-2, AN-24 training jets, and Mi-2 and Mi-8 helicopters are practically intact at the airbase.
