Hotel “Youth Center” or “Youth House” was built in the 1970s by order of the regional committee of the Soviet Komsomol. The Youth House was conceived as a place for youth training and recreation in a creative environment. In addition, it was used for the needs of the Sputnik International Youth Tourism Bureau.
The bureau, created in 1958, was engaged in tourist exchange — it sent Soviet youth on trips to foreign countries and received young foreign tourists on the territory of the USSR. Especially for this, such Youth Houses were built in large cities of the USSR. Now for the majority of Volgograd residents, the Youth House is an abandoned building without windows in the very center of the city, on Chuikova Street.
The Volgograd Youth House consisted of three buildings: a nine-storey hotel, a two-storey building connected to it, where the restaurant was located, and a three-storey building of the Soviet Komsomol school. The hotel was designed for 500 beds. Rooms had 2 and 3 beds, each equipped with its own bathroom and shower. There were also deluxe rooms — two-room apartments, with stained-glass windows. All rooms had a balcony with a view of the Volga river or the Volgograd city. Both hotel guests and townspeople came here — the restaurant was a great success.
The third building of the complex was the school of the Soviet Komsomol activists. Here Soviet youth were taught social and political culture. For large meetings, a 500-seat lecture hall was provided with the possibility of showing films. In the 1990s, the hotel began to be used as an office building, then it was called the “Youth Center”. In the restaurant building, the first city night club “Crown” was opened in 1996, the interior of the premises has undergone changes in this regard. When the club closed in 2007, the hotel was completely abandoned.
The territory of the abandoned hotel with the buildings located on it was bought out several times. As a result, the appearance of reconstruction of the hotel was started, but soon the work stopped, the territory was surrounded by a fence, watchmen and guards with dogs appeared.
The hotel still belongs to a private person, and it is impossible to legally force that person to restore the complex or destroy the complex.
